Chapter Nine

Who He’s Known the Longest

A s far as Jason could tell, Avery might not be happy with the current state of her serves, but she was still plenty dangerous even now. A cheer went up at the practice’s end, as Avery blasted the opposing trio with consecutive service aces. Samantha swore under her breath as the final of these, which ended the match, deflected off her arms and fired itself almost to the gym’s ceiling before it came down.

Jason watched Avery, Angela, and Clara celebrate their win, then regroup with the remainder of their team for the post-practice huddle. After that, they all gathered around him, where he dutifully handed out water bottles. He quickly grew acutely aware of the numerous eyes upon him, though the looks held a variety of thoughts behind them.

“To the showers!” Christine called, breaking the focus on him before it grew awkward.

Most of the group marched off with her. One did not, though she didn’t linger long enough for anyone to check over their shoulder and spot her.

“So, should I shower, or not?” Avery asked quietly.

“Up to you,” Jason said. “You might need another afterward, though.”

“We’ll see if you can make me feel like I need another,” she said, eyes flashing with a dangerous combination of competitiveness and lustfulness.

Jason watched her chase after the others, heart already thrumming like a cold engine warming up. Glancing around the gym, he wondered if they’d stay in here or head somewhere else. He realized that they’d never discussed it, though he imagined Avery already had an opinion on the matter.

What he did not imagine was that, for the second time in as many practices, Yvette would join him alone in the gym. As before, it seemed she’d showered quicker than the rest. However, this time she’d dressed herself properly before coming out. Wordlessly, the dark-haired beauty handed him her phone, which raised his eyebrows.

“If you want to come to my place tomorrow night, put your number into my phone.”

Jason spent a few seconds processing, and then the next twenty hurriedly entering his information into it. She glanced at what he’d put down, then flicked her eyes up at him. Completely inscrutable, she nodded slightly and made to exit the gym.

Everything else progressed as normal, though with one alteration. Today, he wasn’t going home with Angela.

“See ya, Jason,” Clara said as she and Samantha walked off.

“Have a good one, you two,” he told them both.

They engaged in hushed whisperings as they reached the door, and the tall redhead and slender brunette both glanced back at him when they reached the doors. Their whispering intensified as they left the gym.

Christine appeared next. The nefarious mastermind behind everything tossed him a crisp salute but didn’t engage in conversation with him today. She blew him a kiss and trailed out of the gym.

Avery followed her path a minute later. He made to stand and follow her, but she pointed a glance toward the locker room, where a single woman remained. Understanding, he sat back down and waited for Angela to arrive.
